DIY glitter candles

Category: DIY | December 7th, 2011

so who doesn’t love candles?? a great addition to a home and a great/easy gift for others. now, who doesn’t love glitter?? my sweet friend katy made some of these gems and i fell in love and had to do some myself!

1. materials: plain but soon to be bedazzled candles, glitter, mod podge (or another type of glue, but MP is pretty amazing), paint brush.
2. get your glitter station all ready with glitter plate and drying plate.
3. coat the outside part with mod podge
4. go to town with the glitter. rolling it is the easiest.
5. coat the top part and then sprinkle glitter on top.
6. let it dry and give it a little shake.
7. then do one final coat of MP to seal in the glitter.
8. let it dry over night or for a long time. it takes quite awhile for all the white to turn clear.
9. enjoy! fabulous glitterfied candles.
**great Christmas presents!

thank you katy for the tutorial and your permission. ;)

joy to the world garland

Category: DIY | December 6th, 2011

sweet, sweet joy

saw this lil number and had to do it. :) i kept it simple with one color (it’s an olive green color) since i have a lot going on in the room already. but i’m loving her color choices too. this is super easy! doesn’t take long at all, and adds some more holiday spirit! what if i did a different phrase garland for every window?!? how awesome would that be?

3 steps:
*cut out letters on card stock
*hole punch the top
*string it, hang, and enjoy!

“The Lord is my strength and my shield; my heart trusts in him and he helps me. My heart leaps for joy, and with my song I praise Him.” Psalm 28:7

DIY fabric dry erase calendar

Category: DIY | December 5th, 2011

remember this calendar i put together awhile back? yea…it needed a makeover. so here’s my fabric dry erase calendar version. (i finally used my vintage sheet for something!) there are tons out there so you can get real creative with these things.

1. materials: frame with glass, cardboard backing that usually comes with the frame, fabric (not too busy or dark, so you can see what you write), tape (optionals: yarn, hot glue, stickers)
2. cut fabric bigger than the cardboard. mine was about 1 1/2″ longer on each side (just enough to tape it down)
3. start taping down the corners. middle, then one side, then the other.
4. tape down all the remaining sides to the cardboard (don’t worry about it looking pretty…no one will see it) :)
5. **i did another layer of fabric because the floral fabric is too bright for the mister so i toned it down with some sheer fabric. :) so do the same exact thing with the second layer
6. i measured out all the lines on the back and hot glued pieces of yarn to make the dividing lines. this is such an easy way to get straight lines, plus it adds a little texture to the calendar.
7. put the cardboard into the frame and yay!!
8. i used stickers for the days which is a nicer look than my handwriting. ;)
9. now hang it up and enjoy your new calendar with dry erase markers! easy peasy.

options:
* if you have foam board on hand you can use that as well and use pins to pin in the fabric. i didn’t have any, so tape it was.
* you can use markers/pens for the lines as well
TIP: make sure your fabric is not too bulky that it won’t fit into the frame.

DIY wood painting

Category: DIY | December 1st, 2011

so there was this piece of wood nailed to a tree out front before we moved into our house….and it stayed there for about a year and a half after we moved in. lol. finally took it down (and of course kept it). and gave it a little makeover!

not exactly sure what it says, but this is before.

gave it a nice white coat. didn’t coat the entire thing though. then put on a sea greenish color after..then a tan color. i used the lovely acrylic paint. it’s cheap and dries fast! i did the layers while the paint was still wet so it blended nicely. or at least i think so. ;) (oh and Christmas music in the background makes it better).

so here was the tricky part. i saw this super cute DIY on pinterest and wanted to use this. so i printed it out (it’s supposed to be backwards) and got it all aligned and then went to town (following the instructions word for word).

but sadly, after i rubbed as hard as i could without ripping the paper…this is what i ended up with. umm, nothing. haha. sooo clearly i did something wrong. who knows. (if you find out, please tell! i’d love to try this again)

so i decided to just do it the old fashion way and eye ball it with a pen…

and then painted it. i diluted the paint with a little water to give it a washed out look.

after it dried, which was super fast, i sanded it a bit to make it even more old looking. does it look like i tried too hard?? lol

and yay! for those of you who don’t know….that’s when we got married. :)

our entryway is a work in progress at the moment. i’m liking it above the door. adds a nice touch. :) it was super easy guys! i want to do more! but i have no random wood laying around…anyone close have any they don’t want?? ;)

**don’t forget about the Uprinting poster print giveaway!!! you get to choose whatever print you want. no one has entered yet….so the chances are pretty high! haha.

onesie makeover

Category: DIY | November 29th, 2011

remember when i thought i was dyeing the right color for P’s halloween costume? well the FIRST one i did came out with a stain. (then i did another yellow one which is nice and pretty, but then realized it needed to be orange so did another one…thank goodness i had lots of white onesies). anyways, if you know me then you know i keep everything that i think can be used for some type of makeover/craft. so clearly, i kept the messed up yellow onesie. and here’s a cute/super easy makeover.

1. materials: old/stained clothing, lace (or other trimmings), pins, and sewing maching (or you could be really cool/patient and hand sew it)
2. measure the lace, cut the lace, fold the ends over and sew ends
3. pin in place
4. sew it down
5. and done! easy peasy.

*a little bit goes a long way. i love easy makeovers!
