DIY pretty doily garland

Category: DIY | March 22nd, 2011

penelope and i have been hanging out in my little “studio” more lately (mainly bc husband doesn’t like it when i bring everything out in the living room and make a huge mess…i can’t help it if i want to be with him and craft at the same time!) :) anyways…so i have been wanting to decorate the room more and more each time i go in there. there already is a lot going on…but that is my style (and that’s the only room where i can really express it there) haha.

i have seen doily projects a lot lately and i had some on hand so i thought it would make a perfect addition to the room!

what you’ll need:
*pretty doilies (i used paper ones)
*leftover morning coffee (or you can use tea bags)
*some type of string

i soaked the doilies in the coffee for about 5 minutes and let them dry. **i noticed that when i dunked them in water first then soaked in the coffee…it worked out better. ;)

you can see the difference. a little vintage affect…even has the old, wrinkled look too. :) then i folded them in half.

hang up the string and then hang the doilies. and that’s it!

i love it! and so easy. (you can use some type of glue or tape to close up the doilies, but i like them slightly open) okay, now your turn! i’d love to see how yours turns out or where you hang it up! i had some extra so i put some up in penelope’s room. :)

attempting mosaic

mosaic
so i’m still working on miss penny’s room…which is funny because we hardly ever go in there, yet it’s the most decorated and finished room so far. ha. got my priorities down. lol. anyways…here’s a little makeover project i did for her room.
before
got this beauty at goodwill for about $3. nice. i needed a little side table to go next to the glider, but clearly didn’t want to spend money. ;)
after
gave it a couple coats and attempted to throw a mosaic pattern on there. turned out pretty decent.

you can ask my dear friend ellen….it was looking a little rough when i started it. i actually had no idea what i was doing. (and i don’t normally start projects like that…i’m not that confident) but i like. be on the look out for it when i show a little tour of her room coming up!

side note: last night was a bit rough. pretty sure i didn’t get any sleep. and this morning wasn’t any better….so hope the rest of the day has a brighter side to it. i have lots of things i want to get done….but i’m learning that my plans will not always happen. it’s all good. if penny wants to steal all my attention then okay. :) although i just realized that the shower i took today was the first one since monday. ummmm was that too much to share? well just shows that i put other things and baby first. lol. even if i did smell like spit up. ok wellll happy friday!!!!!!!!!!! :)

DIY wire frames

Category: DIY | January 14th, 2011

i saw this fun DIY project over at Under the Sycamore, and had been wanting to do something like it since then. except i didn’t have any chicken wire…soo good ole plain wire will do. :)
framespaint
had these little frames laying around for some time now. happy to use them finally! also…i would totally use spray paint over actual painting (because um it’s way faster) but gotta stay away from the spray paint for now. acrylic is next best thing in my opinion.
painted frames
gave them one coat. i like the worn out look. otherwise just do a couple of coats and you’re good to go.
eye screw
after it was dry i used these nifty little eye screws. if you don’t have those laying around then small hooks, nails, or even thumb tacks will work. :)
wire
wirewires
had some of this jewelry wire stuff and it worked perfectly. doesn’t need to be hardcore wire since i’m just hanging a few photos. you can use string or yarn or anything else creative too.
frames
framesframes
(lighting is a bit different in baby’s room) simply hang up the frames with some small nails and yay!
pics
this is a good start to the family pics. i know there are lots more to add. so i need to print out some more. (don’t worry M&D) ;)
molly
parents
excited to find out what she’s going to look like!

**i am so excited about these frames. when baby girl is here, i can’t wait to stand in front of them and point out everyone’s photo and tell her how much they love her! tender. lol and eventually be able to put names to their faces. :)

makeover: toy box style

Category: DIY | January 11th, 2011

toys
baby girl is starting to get a cute and furry collection of toys and i don’t really have a spot for them just yet.
bumbo
bumbo
she also got this from a sweet friend and it came with a fun box, that for some reason i couldn’t throw away. (thinking i could do something with it, of course) ps. can’t wait for her to use this. i think it’s so fun!
toy box
soooo a toy box it is!
materials
things i used:
-lovely bumbo box
-scrap paper
-old fitted sheet that conveniently had the elastic still in it
-bias tape (this one is from 1974…39 cents) awesome
-scissors
-hot glue gun
-mod podge
-sewing machine or hand stitching

(you can totally use different materials. all fabric would be very nice too, but i guess i got lazy)
cutting paper
1. cut the paper to the measurements of the box (i used that nifty little device to make sure i cut straight)
mod podge
2. mod podge the paper on the box (i cut the top off of the box before hand, but you can decorate that too and use it if you’d like)
bias trim
3. measure/cut out bias trip and hot glue the trim to the corners
sheet
sheet
4. while that is drying you can sew the inside fabric piece (right sides together). you pretty much sew a miniature fitted bed sheet (kind of) ;)
*tip: using elastic is the idea. and makes for the fitting part so much easier! so basically i didn’t really measure nicely because the elastic works wonders. just make sure it’s not too tight or too loose. :)
wrapping
inside
5. then place the fabric on the inside and wrap it over the top! i had a lot of extra fabric but no one will see that, right?
side view
6. then put whatever it is you want to store in the pretty box.
happy home
toy box
yay! temporary spot for now. so for all you people out there who are like me and save random things because you see them having another life….here’s one thing to change it into! I am all about restyling old things.

ps. i am almost 100% done with the baby room. so i’ll post pics of the room soon!
