everyone should own a handmade key chain

heart

I heart the weekends….I especially love Sundays. they make me happy. I love spending about half of my day at church and allll day with my husband (it’s the only day we both don’t work)….on a random/side note: I realized I need to post more often. if I want to keep y’all interested I need to step it up. : ) here’s a fun tutorial I did the other day with my friend ellen. her friend diana deane originally made one of these beauties for ellen and myself, so the idea and inspiration go out to her! not really sure how she did it, I kind of made up my own way and used my different materials…

* all you need is fun fabric, embroidery thread, embroidery needle (or a needle big enough to have that thread go through), scissors, pattern piece if you’d like, and plastic canvas (I used this because I had some randomly, but if not, you can use anything that’s sturdy or just a lot of fabric to make it thick)
materials

* use the pattern you want (I just cut mine out of cardboard) and trace/cut out a front and a back piece along with the plastic canvas for inside
heart pieces

* before you get started, cut a little whole in the two fabric pieces and canvas where the key ring loop thingy can go through.
cut hole

* layer them in a sandwich (hmm I’m hungry) and I used a glue stick to hold the pieces together (since pins wouldn’t work with the canvas). then start with the ring hole area.  I tied a knot at the end of my thread and started inside the heart so the knot wouldn’t show. make sure you pull the thread tight as you go so it makes enough room for the ring (on the first one I did, I didn’t do that. but it does go through…barely).
hole

* once you finish the hole, finish it off with knots and try to hide them as best as you can (I don’t know the secret to this otherwise I would tell you).
finished hole

* then start on the outside threading anywhere you’d like. I started at the bottom. again start the knot from underneath a fabric layer to hide the knot. I just went in, out, and around…in, out, and around…until you get alllll the way around. you can spread out your thread if you’d like of you can cover the entire thing like I did.
starting outside

* now if you are like me and don’t know how much thread to use : ) and you run out before you are done, then just simply tie another strand of thread to the first one and keep on going! I attempted to knot them underneath the fabric again. (there might be an extra bump there but it just adds character).
ran out of thread

* then again magically tie up the thread with knots and maneuver it underneath the fabric to hide the ends. and then you’re done!!!
ta da!

* you can use a key ring loop or one of these beaded snap fastener things. you can do any shape, any size, the sky is the limit!

here’s to a fabulous week ahead!!

old meets new

so I have a ton of random clothing articles that do not fit or just need some TLC. here are the lucky contestants this time….

before
what do you get when you mix an old shirt that is too short and an old but clean fitted bed sheet???
molly panda was curious too…

TADA!!! a lil cutting, some seaming, more cutting, seam ripping, more sewing…and there ya go. : ) I am in need of brushing up on my sewing skills. but this was fun, and I was super excited because the waste band of the fitted sheet was already done. I am all about the short cuts.

pocketribbon edge
some more random fabric which made a lovely pocket and I even lined the bottom of the sheet with ribbon for fun!  : ) (and yes, it was fun. ha) threw in some lace to spice it up too.

I have more leftover fitted and flat sheets and tons of old shirts….hmmmm what to do next??

cake balls to the rescue

Category: DIY, everyday | October 15th, 2009

changing it up….baking!!!!!!! everyone loves baking. giving all the credit to my bestie, Beth, who so graciously let me help her make these beauties one day. these are treats you make for everyone else because there are so many and so evil.  ; )

not sure what the official name is….so let’s go with **red velvet cake balls** classic.

rvcb

it’s super easy and messy…but fun! here’s what you need. (these are the ones I chose but any brand will work)

magic ingredients

*red velvet cake mix*cream cheese icing*baking white chocolate (or milk chocolate)*

1. mix the cake mix together (box says to use canola oil and eggs so don’t forget those)
mixing

doesn’t it look fabulous

2. place in pan (you can use all sorts of sizes. the box informs you of how long to cook in the oven according to the size) we used the good ole 9×13 in. and cooked for about 35 minutes in the oven. so this is when you can do other crafts while waiting : ) oh and maybe drink some coffee. then yay
cake!

again, looks fab.

3. let it cool for about 30 minutes. you can speed up the process using the freezer too. once it’s cool, you can start getting messy and crumble up the cake in another bowl.
crumbles

well done ellen : ) (she helped me out)

4. take the lovely container of cream cheese icing and mix it into the crumbles. now if you do not want your fingers to be pink for a few hours or so then assign someone else this project. ; )
icing mix

the best part.

5. again we placed the mix into the freezer to make the batter hard and easier to clump together. (clump is a funny word) we made them about quarter size, but you can make them however big or small. I think the smaller the more fun, then that way you have a lot…to share.
cake balls!

we placed them back in the original pan, and had to use another pan since there were so many.

6. while the balls were in the freezer (and there is no particular time how long to keep them in there, just as long as they are hardened) we melted the white chocolate bars. again you can use regular chocolate or even dark.
white chocolate

amazing white chocolate

7. then smother the cake balls in the white chocolate and set aside to dry. if you have extra you can cover them some more with extra goodness.
almost there

we placed them back in the pans so we could freeze them again. they can be eaten at room temperature or frozen. in my opinion I love them frozen.

8. if you have even more extra chocolate, or just to change them up a bit, you can use a fork to sprinkle more chocolate (because you can never have enough). plus they look fun!
sprinkles

ahhhhmazing.

9. it doesn’t take long for them to harden, so you can place them in a container in the freezer or eat them!
ta da!

: )

9 steps seem like a lot but it’s soooo worth it. thanks again beth!! you’re the best. plus everyone at my work will be happy.
if anyone tries this let me know how it works!! or if you change it up and get crazy!

feathers=fun

meet betty! she’s a brightly colored, fun, and exciting…headband. : )
betty

Autumn, over at Cinnamon Sticks, and I spent a lovely morning together with crafts and coffee. coffee makes crafting better.  we had our inspiration from another feather headband over at Craftstylish. but we decided to skip the sewing parts, and we did not have any buckram (still not sure what that even is). we used the oh so helpful felt as our platform. then glued on some feathers and a cool button or two or three and poof! you have a betty!

betty1back of betty

you can wear it like a traditional headband or if you are in a 20’s mood around the forehead. either way it looks fab!

betty2 betty3

this is clearly an every day accessory…clearly. be sure to check out Cinnamon Sticks to see her fun color scheme too! have a fabulous day!!!
